Girls Inc. of Long Island Partners with Roosevelt School District’s “My Sister’s Keeper” to Empower the Next Generation of Changemakers

Deer Park, NY – Girls Inc. of Long Island is proud to announce its recent collaboration with Roosevelt School District’s My Sister’s Keeper (MSK) program, hosting a dynamic workshop at Roosevelt High School designed to inspire young women to be strong, smart, and bold.

The workshop brought together MSK students and Girls Inc. facilitators for an engaging series of hands-on activities centered on creativity, practical-skills building and peer support. Throughout the session, high school students explored two topics of particular relevance to adolescents: Healthy Relationships, and Boundaries & Consent.

Through guided discussions and interactive exercises, participants examined different types of relationships, identified the characteristics of healthy and unhealthy dynamics, and practiced strategies for setting and maintaining personal boundaries. Students also took part in scenario-based role-playing activities, allowing them to define consent and apply their understanding to real-life situations – deepening their awareness of the difference between freely given consent and coercion.

By creating a safe, supportive space for open dialogue and skill-building, the partnership between Girls Inc. of Long Island and Roosevelt High School’s MSK provides meaningful opportunities for young women to build confidence, develop leadership and practical life skills, and foster positive peer connections.

“Through My Sister’s Keeper, we are creating opportunities for our students to see themselves as leaders, innovators, and changemakers,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Shawn Wightman. “By partnering with organizations like Girls Inc. of Long Island, we are strengthening our commitment to equity and ensuring that every young woman in Roosevelt has the support, mentorship, and resources needed to succeed in school and beyond.”

“Our mission is to ensure that every girl on Long Island recognizes her own power and understands herself to be strong, smart, and bold,” said Susan Dunbar, Director of Programs at Girls Inc. of Long Island. “Working with Roosevelt School District allows us to reach these incredible young women at a pivotal moment in their lives, providing them with the tools to navigate barriers and lead with confidence.”
