Girls Incorporated® of Long Island was founded in 2005 as an affiliate of Girls Incorporated®, an international non-profit youth-serving organization with roots dating back to 1894. GILI’s founders include a diverse group of women who saw the need to bring gender-specific programs to girls on Long Island in order to foster equity and hope for the future.

The mission of Girls Inc. of Long Island is to provide school- and community-based programming that serves the unique needs of girls aged 6-18 living in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. Through community outreach partnerships, the organization helps girls to achieve their full human potential. Girls Inc. of Long Island is dedicated to the advocacy of gender equity for all girls in all areas of their lives.

In ongoing conversations with community leaders, we are doing a lot of listening. Girls Inc. of Long Island will provide a resource for programming to address the issues identified by community members as most important for girls in their communities. Among the issues identified so far are girls’ self-esteem and sense of worth, gang and drug awareness and prevention, and civic empowerment. As we develop these community conversations, one thing becomes very clear—most of these issues, as they affect girls, are interrelated. By addressing any one of these, programs will indirectly impact a host of other issues.
